Imagine God whispering a secret into your ear about someone else – a secret you couldn’t possibly know on your own. This has nothing to do with guessing or intuition; it’s the word of knowledge [1 Corinthians 12:8], a special gift from the Holy Spirit. God gives you supernatural information about facts, details, or situations hidden from natural sight. It’s His way of revealing something specific, often to bring healing, guidance, or a breakthrough in someone’s life. The bible talks about this further in Luke 8:17, and Jesus clearly demonstrated this in Matthew 9:4.
Note that it is not showing off; it’s about showing God’s deep, intimate care.
The Unseen Pain: Samuel’s Secret
Samuel was a quiet young man, carrying a heavy secret. His father had left when he was twelve, a wound that festered beneath a calm exterior. He attended a small church gathering, feeling alone and unseen, silently questioning, “God, do You even care about my pain?”
Across the room sat Clara, a woman known for her gentle spirit. During worship, a profound impression settled in her heart: “He feels abandoned by his father.” Clara didn’t know Samuel, didn’t know his story, and certainly didn’t know the exact prayer he had just whispered. Yet, the knowing was undeniable, a clear, gentle nudge from the Holy Spirit.
Clara hesitated. She didn’t want to embarrass him or speak out of turn. But the prompting grew stronger, a divine burden to share God’s heart. After the meeting, she approached Samuel softly, her voice kind. “Samuel,” she began, “I feel the Lord wants you to know He has never abandoned you. The pain from your father leaving is not unseen.”
Samuel froze. His carefully constructed walls crumbled. Tears welled in his eyes as he whispered, “How did you know?” Clara simply smiled, her eyes reflecting a deeper truth. “I didn’t. But God did.” In that moment, years of emotional walls collapsed. Samuel felt truly seen and loved, not by Clara, but by the God who knew his deepest, unspoken pain.
This is the essence of the word of knowledge: God revealing what is hidden so He can heal what is hurting.
What This Gift Is Not
While the word of knowledge is God revealing a specific fact or detail for a loving purpose, it’s crucial to understand what this gift is not:
- Not Gossip: It’s never for sharing secrets or embarrassing people. It’s for healing and helping.
- Not Fortune-Telling or Clairvoyance: It doesn’t predict the future like a psychic. It reveals past or present facts for God’s purposes. In Deuteronomy 18:10-12, the bible clearly condemns clairvoyance and fortune telling.
- Not Human Intelligence: It’s not about being smart or having good intuition. It’s a supernatural download from God.
- Not for Control: It’s never meant to manipulate or control others.
Cultivating a Heart for Knowledge
You can’t force this gift, but you can prepare your heart to be used by God, just as Clara did:
- Walk closely with God: The more you know Him, the more you’ll recognize His voice.
- Listen quietly: God often speaks in gentle ways. Be still and pay attention.
- Read your Bible: God’s Word fills you with His truth, making you more sensitive to His Spirit.
- Be humble: This gift is about God’s glory, not yours. If you receive a word, share it gently and with love.
- Pray for others: As you pray, God might reveal things to help you pray more effectively.
Using this Gift Responsibly
Clara’s gentle approach offers powerful guidance if you believe you’ve received a word of knowledge:
- Share it gently: Start with phrases like, “I feel the Lord may be showing me…” or “I have an impression that…”
- Focus on healing: The goal is always to bring comfort, clarity, or breakthrough, not to accuse or expose.
- Keep it aligned with Scripture: God’s revelations will never go against His written Word.
- Respect privacy: If it’s a sensitive detail, share it privately and with great care.
This gift is a beautiful reminder that God sees us, knows us, and cares deeply about every detail of our lives. He uses ordinary people like Clara to reveal His extraordinary love, bringing light to hidden places and healing to wounded hearts.
Reflection
- Have you ever known something about someone that you couldn’t explain, and it helped them?
- Have you ever felt a sudden burden or insight into someone’s hidden pain?
- Holy Spirit, am I willing to be a vessel of Your compassion and revelation, to speak Your knowing to those who need to feel seen?
A Simple Prayer:
Holy Spirit, thank You for the gift of the word of knowledge. Open my ears to hear Your whispers and my heart to receive Your insights. Teach me to speak Your truth with humility and love, so that others may feel seen, healed, and deeply known by You. Use this gift to glorify Jesus and build Your church. Amen.
