We’ve explored the powerful gifts of the Spirit – God’s supernatural abilities working through us. Now, we turn to the fruit of the Spirit: the beautiful, Christ-like character God grows in us. While gifts can impress, fruit transforms. While gifts can fill a room, fruit fills a life. Gifts can be counterfeited, but true fruit cannot.
The fruit of the Spirit is the undeniable evidence that the Holy Spirit isn’t just visiting; He’s living within, slowly, quietly, steadily shaping us into the image of Jesus [Galatians 5:22-23]. It’s the true condition of a believer’s heart made visible.
The Tree That Looked Alive
Thomas had an orchard that he spends so much time taking care of. One tree stood tall, leafy, vibrant – the envy of all. Visitors admired its impressive stature. One day, Thomas, reached for its fruit, he found nothing. Not a single apple. It looked alive, but it wasn’t producing life. He later discoveerd that a disease in its roots was slowly killing it from the inside.
This tree mirrors a profound truth: a believer can appear gifted, talented, and impressive on the outside, yet lack the vital fruit of the Spirit. The Holy Spirit grows fruit so our lives don’t just look spiritual; they are spiritual.
Why This Inward Growth is Paramount
- Fruit Reveals True Leadership: Jesus said, “By their fruit you will know them” [Matthew 7:16]. Gifts can operate even when a heart is drifting, but fruit cannot. It’s the ultimate indicator of who truly leads your life.
- Fruit Protects the Gifts: A person can preach powerfully yet be harsh. They can prophesy accurately yet be prideful. They can lead worship beautifully yet be impatient. Fruit acts as a spiritual guardrail, ensuring our gifts are used with love, humility, and integrity, preventing them from becoming dangerous or self-serving.
- Fruit is the Mark of Maturity: Spiritual maturity isn’t measured by outward displays of power, but by the quiet, consistent presence of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. These are the hallmarks of a life truly surrendered to Christ.
- Fruit Heals the World: People may admire your gifts, but they are healed by your fruit. A world starved for genuine love, peace, and kindness finds hope when they encounter Christ’s character in you.
The Pastor Who Stopped Striving
Young Pastor Elijah once confessed to his mentor, “I want God to use me more. I want to preach with power.” The mentor wisely replied, “Then let Him grow fruit in you. Ministry without fruit wounds people. Fruit without ministry still blesses them. If you let the Spirit grow fruit in you, the gifts will flow safely.”
That conversation changed Elijah. He stopped striving to be impressive and started surrendering to be transformed. As the Spirit cultivated fruit in him, people didn’t just listen to him – they trusted him. His character became his most powerful sermon.
What This Series Will Explore
Over the next episodes, we will delve into each fruit – love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control – not as abstract concepts, but as living realities the Spirit forms in us. We’ll discover how each fruit grows, how it’s tested, and how it becomes visible in our everyday lives.
It is our hope that God will use these series to grow each fruit in you, and your life will radiate the blessedness of the Holy Spirit.
Reflection
- Are the gifts in your life louder than the fruit?
- Do people experience Christ when they experience you?
A Simple Prayer:
Holy Spirit, plant Your fruit deep in my heart. Shape my character, soften my reactions, and transform my desires. Let the life of Christ grow in me until it becomes visible to everyone around me. Amen.
