Scripture Focus:
“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” Psalm 46:1
Introduction
Good morning. Today I want to continue in the series from the last few days…something every one of us knows all too well: stress.
Stress shows up in different ways. Deadlines at work, health concerns, struggles in our relationships, financial pressures, etc. The weight of responsibility that just does not let up….At times, it can feel overwhelming.
But as believers, we are not left to handle stress on our own. We have something the world does not have. We have God Himself as our refuge and strength.
Today we are going to look at two biblical examples, Daniel and Paul, and see how they handled intense pressure. From their lives, we will learn how God expects us to respond when stress comes our way.
Daniel: Turning to God in the Midst of Stress
Scripture: Daniel 6:10
“When Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went home. And in his upper room, with his windows open toward Jerusalem, he knelt down on his knees three times that day, and prayed and gave thanks before his God, as was his custom since early days.”
Context
Daniel was living in exile in Babylon, serving under a foreign king. He had risen to a position of influence, but that very influence made him a target. A decree was signed stating that anyone who prayed to any god other than the king would be thrown into the lions’ den.
This was not a minor inconvenience. This was a life or death situation. Daniel knew the consequences.
Daniel’s Response to Stress
Daniel did not panic. He did not hide. He did not change his habits to protect himself. He went home and did what he had always done. He prayed.
His response to pressure was not fear. It was faith. Stress did not drive him away from God. It drove him deeper into God’s presence.
Application for Us
Make prayer your first response.
When stress hits, our instinct is often to scroll, vent, distract ourselves, or immediately try to fix everything. Daniel shows us a better way. He went to God first.
Think about a moment when you feel overwhelmed at work or at home. Before jumping into panic mode, pause and pray. Ask God for wisdom, peace, and clarity. Even a short prayer can reset your heart.
Build a rhythm of prayer.
Daniel’s prayer life did not start in a crisis. It was already his habit. When the pressure came, prayer was his natural response.
Start small. Begin your day with a simple prayer asking God for strength. Take intentional pauses throughout the day to invite God into stressful moments. Prayer does not have to be long. It just needs to be sincere.
Key Truth
Stress may feel overwhelming, but when we turn to God in prayer, He meets us with peace and strength.
Paul: Finding Strength in Weakness
Scripture: 2 Corinthians 12:9–10
“But He said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”
Context
Paul lived under constant pressure. He was beaten, imprisoned, rejected, shipwrecked, and threatened with death. At one point, he pleaded with God to remove a persistent struggle he called a thorn in the flesh.
God did not remove it. Instead, God gave Paul a promise: “My grace is sufficient for you.”
Paul’s Response to Stress
Paul stopped trying to rely on his own strength. He learned to accept his weakness and depend fully on God’s grace.
Rather than seeing stress as a failure, Paul saw it as an opportunity for God’s power to show up. His weakness became the place where God’s strength was most visible.
Application for Us
Embrace your limits.
Stress often grows when we believe we have to do everything on our own. Paul reminds us that it is okay to admit we are tired, overwhelmed, or struggling. When we acknowledge our weakness, we create space for God’s strength.
If you feel stretched thin trying to balance work, family, and personal responsibilities, pause and admit your need. Ask God for help. Reach out to others when necessary. You were never meant to carry everything alone.
Find contentment in God’s grace.
We often believe peace will come when our circumstances change. Paul discovered that peace comes from trusting God’s grace, even when circumstances stay the same.
If you are dealing with a difficult relationship or an ongoing challenge, instead of constantly wishing it away, ask God for the grace to respond with patience, love, and faithfulness.
Key Truth
Stress can become a doorway to deeper dependence on God. Our weakness invites His strength.
For Us: How God Expects Us to Handle Stress
From the lives of Daniel and Paul, we learn three clear truths about how God calls us to respond when stress comes.
Turn to God, not yourself.
Our instinct is often to fix, control, or escape. God invites us to come to Him first. Pause. Breathe. Pray. Invite Him into the moment.
Lean on God’s strength, not your own.
God does not ask you to be strong on your own. He asks you to trust Him. When you feel weak, remember that His power is at work in you.
Remember who you are in Christ.
Stress has a way of making us forget our identity. You are not defined by your performance, productivity, or perfection. You are a beloved child of God. Stress does not change that.
Conclusion
Stress is part of life, but it does not have to control us.
Daniel shows us the power of prayer in the middle of pressure. Paul shows us the beauty of trusting God’s grace in our weakness. God may not remove every stressful situation, but He promises to be our refuge and strength in the middle of it.
As we face the pressures of life, may we turn to God first, lean on His strength, and trust that His grace is always enough.
Prayer
Father, we come to You today acknowledging the stress and pressures we carry. Thank You that You are our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Teach us to turn to You in prayer, to lean on Your strength, and to rest in Your grace. Help us to remain faithful and trusting, knowing that You are always with us. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Action Steps
This week, pray first when stress shows up.
Take a moment each day to acknowledge your weakness and ask God for strength. When you feel overwhelmed, remind yourself that God’s grace is sufficient and you are not alone.
