Beyond Explanation: Understanding the Gift of Miracles

The gift of miracles is one of the most often skeptically viewed gifts of the Spirit. In a world shaped by science and reason, miracles are frequently dismissed as superstition, manipulation, or emotional trickery. Some associate them with sorcery, others with deception, and sadly, counterfeit displays have led many to doubt the genuine article.

But the gift of miracles is not theatrics. It is not manipulation. It is not human power. It is the present, active power of God breaking into the natural world. Miracles occur when heaven interrupts earth. These are times when God bends the natural order to reveal His glory. He does this to advance His kingdom or to rescue His people [1 Corinthians 12:10, Hebrews 2:4]. They are God’s fingerprints on impossible situations, proving that His power transcends all human understanding and scientific limits.

A Story: When a Miracle Broke the Silence

Let me share a story that I know personally.

Sarah and Mark had endured years of heartbreaking disappointment. Sarah underwent a devastating medical procedure in her youth. Doctors told her she had zero chance of ever carrying a child. Her womb was severely damaged, and doctors confirmed there was no medical hope. They had grieved, accepted their fate, and were exploring other paths to parenthood.

One evening, during a small, intimate prayer gathering, a friend, who was known for her deep faith and sensitivity to the Spirit, felt a powerful conviction. It was unshakeable. She didn’t hear a voice or see a vision. Instead, a profound knowing settled in her spirit. God was going to give Sarah a child.

With trembling boldness, she approached Sarah and Mark after the gathering. “I know this sounds impossible,” she began, “but I believe God is going to open your womb and give you a baby.”

Sarah and Mark were stunned. They hadn’t shared their full medical history with anyone in the group. Tears welled up as they listened, a flicker of hope igniting in their weary hearts. The friend prayed a simple, faith-filled prayer:

“Lord, You are the God of the impossible. You knit us together in our mothers’ wombs. We ask You to perform a miracle in Sarah’s body, to bring forth life where there is no human possibility.”

Three months later, Sarah felt an unfamiliar sensation. A pregnancy test confirmed what seemed utterly impossible. Doctors were baffled. Ultrasounds showed a developing fetus. Because of her medical history, they immediately diagnosed it as an ectopic pregnancy. This is a dangerous condition where the embryo implants outside the uterus. They urged immediate termination.

But Sarah and Mark, clinging to the word their friend had spoken, felt a supernatural peace. They sought a second opinion, then a third. Each time, the diagnosis was the same: ectopic. Yet, something in their hearts told them to wait, to trust. They continued to pray, and their friend continued to stand with them in faith.

Weeks turned into months. Against all medical logic, the pregnancy continued to develop within Sarah’s damaged womb. The doctors, who had initially been so certain, could only shake their heads in disbelief. Nine months later, Sarah gave birth to a healthy baby girl. The medical team was unable to explain it. They could only call it a “spontaneous, unexplainable resolution” of an ectopic pregnancy. This ectopic pregnancy had somehow become a viable uterine pregnancy.

Sarah and Mark called it a miracle. Their friend called it God being God. This is the gift of miracles. It is not showmanship, but divine intervention. It utterly defies science and grounds us in the reality that God is still at work.

What the Gift of Miracles Stands For

The gift of miracles is:

  • A sign of God’s kingdom breaking into the natural world, demonstrating His authority over creation [Acts 19:11].
  • A revelation of His compassion for His people, especially the suffering [Matthew 14:14].
  • A tool for evangelism and spiritual breakthrough, drawing people to believe in a God who does the impossible [John 3:2].
  • A testimony that Jesus is alive and actively working today, just as He did in biblical times [Hebrews 13:8].

Miracles are not entertainment; they are evidence. They are not always loud. Sometimes, they are hidden in everyday life. Consider a car that should have crashed but didn’t. Think about a disease that should have spread but stopped. Imagine a life that should have ended but survived.

A widely shared story online tells of a man trapped in his car during a flash flood. Water rose to his chest. The doors wouldn’t open. He cried out, “Jesus, help me!”

Seconds later, a stranger appeared, smashed the window, pulled him out, and carried him to safety. When the man turned to thank him, the stranger was gone – no footprints, no vehicle, no trace.

Rescuers later said, “No one else was there.”

Was it an angel? A miracle or A divine intervention?

Whatever it was, it was God.

Biblical Examples of Miracles

Miracles are woven throughout Scripture, always pointing to God’s power, compassion, and kingdom:

  1. Moses parted the Red Sea, delivering Israel from slavery [Exodus 14].
  2. Elijah called down fire from heaven, proving God’s supremacy [1 Kings 18].
  3. Elisha multiplied oil for a widow, saving her family from debt [2 Kings 4:1-7].
  4. Jesus fed thousands with a few loaves and fish, walked on water, and raised the dead, demonstrating His full authority [Matthew 14, John 6, John 11].
  5. Peter healed a paralytic and raised Tabitha, continuing Jesus’ work [Acts 3, Acts 9].
  6. Paul cast out demons and survived a deadly snake bite, showcasing God’s protective power [Acts 16, Acts 28].

And that same power is still at work today in the lives of christians if we will yield to the power of the Holy Spirit.

Practical Guidance

If you sense God prompting you to pray for a miracle:

  • Pray with humility: Acknowledge that it is God’s power, not yours.
  • Pray with faith: Believe that God is able and willing to act.
  • Pray with compassion: Let your heart be moved by the need.
  • Pray in Jesus’ name: All authority and power reside in Him.
  • Leave the results to God: Your role is obedience; God’s responsibility is the miracle.

Miracles are God’s responsibility. Obedience is ours.

Reflection

  1. Have you ever witnessed something that defied all human explanation, pointing to a divine hand?
  2. Have you ever sensed God nudging you to pray boldly for the impossible, even when it seemed absurd?
  3. Holy Spirit, am I willing to believe You for the impossible, and to be a vessel through which Your miraculous power can flow?

A Simple Prayer:

Holy Spirit, thank You for the gift of miracles. Open my eyes to see Your power at work in the world around me. Fill my heart with compassion, my spirit with boldness, and my faith with unshakeable trust in Your ability to do the impossible. Use me as a vessel of Your power – not for my glory, but for Yours. Let miracles flow wherever Your kingdom breaks in, proving that You are still the God who works wonders. Amen.
