Availability Over Qualification: Samuel’s Story

Text: 1 Samuel 3:1–21

Theme: God speaks to the willing, not the qualified.

The story opens in the middle of a profound national crisis. Israel is spiritually dry. The priesthood is entirely corrupt. Eli, the high priest, is old and losing both his physical and spiritual vision. His sons are wicked, actively dishonouring God in the very place of worship. The nation is drifting dangerously.

Scripture captures the tragedy in a single, devastating sentence: “The word of the Lord was rare in those days.”

Heaven was quiet. Revelation was scarce. Leadership was failing. But right in the middle of this severe spiritual drought, God was already preparing a voice. He did not choose a seasoned prophet. He did not choose an established priest. He did not choose a king. He chose a child.

Choosing the Unqualified

Samuel is serving in the temple – not because he is trained, not because he is qualified, and not because he is experienced. He is there simply because his mother gave him back to God. He is young, inexperienced, and largely unnoticed by the religious establishment around him.

But he is available. And in the economy of God, availability is always the doorway to calling.

When the Priest is Deaf and the Boy is Listening

One night, the silence of heaven breaks. Samuel hears a voice call his name: “Samuel.” He immediately runs to Eli, saying, “Here I am.” But Eli replies, “I didn’t call you.”

This happens again. And then a third time. Three times the high priest of Israel is completely confused. Three times the young boy is fully attentive. The irony of the moment is striking: the ordained priest cannot hear God, but the child cannot ignore Him.

This is the relentless message of Samuel’s calling: God speaks to those who are listening, not those who merely hold titles.

Entrusting a Child with a National Message

Eli finally realises what is happening. He gives Samuel the instruction that will define the rest of his life: “If He calls again, say, ‘Speak, Lord, for Your servant is listening.’”

God calls a fourth time. “Samuel. Samuel.” And the boy answers exactly as instructed.

God gives Samuel a message, but it is not a comforting one. It is not a gentle, beginner’s prophecy. It is a severe word of judgment against Eli’s entire house for their sustained dishonour of God. This is not a children’s message; it is a heavy, national decree. God deliberately trusts a child with the very truth He can no longer trust a priest to handle.

Courage Born of Obedience

The next morning, Samuel is terrified. Who wouldn’t be? He has to look the man who raised him in the eye and tell him that God is removing his family from leadership forever.

But when Eli demands to know what God said, warning him not to hide anything, Samuel tells him absolutely everything. No edits. No softening. No fear.

This courage is exactly why God chose him. Not because he was old enough, trained enough, or experienced enough – but because his heart was obedient enough to carry the unvarnished truth.

The Prophet Who Restored a Nation

Scripture records the immediate result of that obedience: “The Lord was with Samuel and let none of his words fall to the ground.”

From that single night forward, the trajectory of Israel changes. Samuel becomes the clear voice of God to the nation. He becomes the prophet who anoints kings. He becomes the leader that an entire drifting nation finally listens to. The child who simply knew how to listen becomes the man God uses to lead Israel back to Himself.

A Word to the Reader

Maybe you feel too young today. Maybe you feel entirely unqualified or inexperienced. Maybe you feel completely overshadowed by older, louder, or more established voices around you. Maybe you feel like your posture doesn’t matter because you lack the proper title.

Samuel’s story whispers a vital truth into your insecurity: God is not looking for age, and He is not looking for resumes. He is looking for availability. Calling is never about your age; it is always about your posture.

If you can simply say, “Speak, Lord,” He will speak. He will call. He will use you. Even in a generation where the established voices have failed, God can still use a willing heart to change the course of history.

Prayer

Lord, give me a listening heart. Help me to hear Your voice clearly above every other sound in my generation. Make me willing, obedient, and deeply courageous. Use my life – no matter my age, title, or experience – to carry Your word and honour Your name. Amen.
