The Quiet Work Beneath the Soil
There is a quiet miracle in every garden. A seed is planted, disappears beneath the soil, and seems forgotten. Days and weeks pass. Nothing appears to change.
Yet underneath, life is unfolding. The seed breaks open. A root reaches down. A tender shoot slowly presses upward until one day it breaks into the light. No gardener hears it happen. No gardener can pull the stem upward or command the seed to hurry. Growth happens because God designed the seed to grow.
That is how the Kingdom of God works. We plant. We water. We obey. We trust. But God gives the increase.
Three Stories of Kingdom Growth
One day, Jesus described the Kingdom through three ordinary scenes His listeners knew well.
First, He spoke of a mustard seed. Picture a farmer holding a seed so small it could be lost between his fingers. He presses it into the soil of his field. It looks insignificant, almost laughably small. But as the seasons pass, it grows beyond a simple garden plant into a large, sheltering tree. Birds arrive, settle in its branches, and make their nests there (Matthew 13:31–32).
Then Jesus spoke of leaven. A woman is preparing a large batch of dough. Into the flour, she works a small lump of yeast. Soon it disappears from sight. No one watching can see it at work, yet it quietly spreads through the whole mixture until the entire dough rises (Matthew 13:33).
Finally, Jesus told the story of a growing seed. A farmer scatters seed across the ground. That night he sleeps; the next day he rises and continues with his ordinary life. Meanwhile, the seed sprouts and grows. First the blade appears, then the ear, then the full grain. The farmer does not know how the growth happens. He can sow the seed, but he cannot manufacture life or rush the harvest (Mark 4:26–29).
Our Work Is Sowing; God’s Work Is Increase
These parables show us that the Kingdom often begins with small acts of faithfulness. A quiet prayer, a sincere apology, a Scripture shared, an encouraging word, or a hidden act of service may feel too small to matter. But in God’s hands, these are mustard seeds.
They also teach us humility. We can love a child, pray for a friend, nurture a ministry, or seek healing in a relationship, but we cannot force a heart to change. As Paul wrote, “I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth” (1 Corinthians 3:6). The work beneath the surface belongs to God.
And God’s work exceeds expectation. The little seed becomes a place of rest. The hidden yeast changes the entire dough. The scattered seed becomes a harvest. What seems ordinary in your hand can become powerful in His.
Where Are You Planting?
Perhaps you are sowing into a child, a colleague, a friendship, a new habit, or a dream God has placed in your heart. Perhaps you are waiting for God to soften a hardened heart, restore hope, heal a relationship, or clarify your calling.
Do not despise the hidden season. The Kingdom is still growing when you cannot see green above the soil.

- What hidden work might God be doing in your life or in someone you love?
Prayer Points
Lord, help me to plant seeds of truth, love, and kindness without demanding immediate results. Father, when I cannot see progress, remind me that You are still working beneath the surface. Holy Spirit, I may plant and water, but You alone give the increase. Make my life fertile soil for Your Kingdom. In Jesus Name. Amen
