The Moment You Weren’t Expecting
Everyone has faced a moment that arrived sooner than expected. A guest appears before the house is ready. A deadline moves forward. A storm hits before the forecast promised. In those moments, readiness matters.
Not perfection….Not performance….Readiness.
Jesus used three parables to teach His followers how to live in light of His return. He did not speak of the future to make us anxious; He spoke of it to wake us up. Kingdom life is alert, purposeful, and faithful in the present.
Stay Awake. Stay Ready. Stay Faithful.
Jesus first told the parable of the Ten Virgins. Ten bridesmaids waited through the night for the bridegroom and the wedding celebration. All had lamps. All expected him. All eventually fell asleep.
But only five brought extra oil. They had prepared for a delay. When the midnight cry announced the bridegroom’s arrival, the prepared bridesmaids trimmed their lamps and entered the celebration. The others rushed out to find oil at the last moment and arrived to find the door shut.
They did not miss the feast because they were villains; they missed it because they were careless. Jesus’ message is clear: readiness is not a burst of excitement. It is preparation that lasts (Matthew 25:1–13).
Then Jesus used the startling picture of a Thief in the Night. A homeowner who knew when a thief would come would surely stay awake and guard the house. Because the hour is unknown, the homeowner must remain watchful.
Jesus said His return will be sudden and unexpected. He did not use that image to frighten His people, but to awaken them. Do not drift into complacency. Stay spiritually awake (Matthew 24:42–44).
Finally, Jesus described the Faithful and Unfaithful Servant. A master leaves his household under a servant’s care. The faithful servant continues working, serving, and providing for others even when the master seems delayed. The unfaithful servant assumes the master will not return soon. He becomes distracted, careless, and self-indulgent.
When the master returns, daily faithfulness is rewarded and neglect is exposed. Readiness, Jesus shows, readiness is not found in a dramatic last-minute gesture. It is revealed in ordinary obedience (Matthew 24:45–51).
Readiness Is a Lifestyle
These parables are a gentle alarm clock for the soul.
Readiness is consistency, not intensity. The wise bridesmaids did not perform anything impressive; they simply brought extra oil. A ready life is built through daily prayer, Scripture, repentance, worship, and obedience. Small preparation can have lasting impact.
Readiness is awareness, not anxiety. Jesus never tells His followers to panic. He tells them to pay attention. Awake hearts notice when prayer becomes occasional, love cools, distractions rise, or compromise begins to feel normal. Awareness gives us an opportunity to adjust.
Readiness is faithfulness in the ordinary. The faithful servant was not on a stage; he was doing his work well. Readiness looks like showing up, serving well, loving consistently, giving generously, living honestly, and forgiving quickly.
Readiness is relationship, not fear. The bridegroom is not a threat; he is the one the bridesmaids are waiting to celebrate. We prepare not because we dread Christ’s return, but because we love Him and long for His presence.
Where Have You Become Spiritually Drowsy?
Everyone drifts sometimes. Prayer can become occasional. Scripture can become background noise. Worship can become routine, and purpose can become blurry.
Jesus’ parables gently ask: Where do you need fresh oil? Where do you need renewed focus? Where do you need awakened faithfulness? This is not condemnation. It is an invitation to wake up.

- Are you living with anxious fear about the future, or hopeful anticipation of Christ’s return?
- What would “bringing extra oil” look like in your daily walk with God?
Prayer Points
Lord, awaken my heart and keep me spiritually focused. Father, give me fresh oil – fresh desire, devotion, and obedience. Holy Spirit, remove complacency and strengthen my ordinary walk with You. In Jesus’ name. Amen

Choose one area where you need spiritual alertness: prayer, purity, forgiveness, generosity, service, or purpose. Then choose one habit to strengthen this week – morning Scripture reading, evening reflection, praying for someone daily, or serving someone intentionally.
Readiness grows through small, steady actions. Come, Lord Jesus.
