Bible Reading – Ephesians 6:15
Every morning, Pastor Serena walked the same stretch of Huntington Beach before sunrise. She said it helped her “see the spiritual condition of the city.
She often said, “If you watch people long enough, you can tell who’s walking in peace and who’s walking under pressure.”
One morning, she noticed a young man sitting alone on the sand with his head in hands, shoes beside him, waves rolling in quietly. His name was Evan, a new believer who had been attending her church for three months.
She approached gently.
“Evan, are you alright?” She asked.
Evan shook his head. “Everything feels unstable. My job. My relationships. My thoughts. I feel like I’m slipping everywhere.”
Serena sat beside him.
“Then let’s talk about your shoes.”
Evan’s Unsteady Walk
Evan explained that the past week had been chaotic. A conflict with his girlfriend. A sudden change at work. A misunderstanding with a friend. A rising sense of anxiety he couldn’t shake.
“I keep praying for peace,” he said, “but I don’t feel any.”
Serena listened quietly, then pointed to the sand.
“Evan, peace isn’t something you wait to feel. Peace is something you put on.”
He looked confused.
Serena continued: “When Paul spoke about fitting your feet with Peace in Ephesians 6:15, he wasn’t talking about soft sandals. Roman soldiers wore heavy, studded footwear – like cleats. They gave traction. Stability. Grip. Without them, a soldier slipped in battle.”
She paused. “Peace is traction.”
Evan looked down at his bare feet. “So I’m slipping because I’m not wearing peace?”
Serena nodded. “You’re trying to walk through spiritual battles barefoot.”
What Peace Really Is
Serena opened her small Bible and read slowly:
“My peace I give to you… not as the world gives.” (John 14:27)
“He Himself is our peace.” (Ephesians 2:14)
“The God of peace will be with you.” (Philippians 4:9)
“Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts.” (Colossians 3:15)
Then she explained:
1) Peace is a Person
Not a feeling. Not a mood. Not a moment of calm. Peace is Christ Himself. When you walk with Him, you walk in peace.
2) Peace is Preparation
Paul says “the preparation of the gospel of peace.” Peace prepares you for whatever the day brings. It makes you ready, steady, balanced, and unshakeable.
3) Peace is Protection
Peace guards your reactions, your emotions, your decisions, and your relationships. Peace keeps you from slipping when life pushes hard.
How to Put On Peace Daily
Serena gave Evan three practical steps to stay peaceful daily- simple, biblical, doable.
a) Start Your Day With Gospel Truth
Not news. Not social media. Not your inbox. Start with one gospel truth each morning: “I am forgiven.” “I am loved.” “God is with me.” “My future is secure.” “I am not fighting alone.” This is how you lace the shoes.
b) Speak Peace Into Your Day
Serena taught him to pray: “Jesus, steady my steps today. Let Your peace guard my mind and guide my walk.” Not long. Not complicated. Just intentional.
c) Refuse to Walk Into Conflict Barefoot
Before difficult conversations, stressful meetings, or emotional moments: Pause. Breathe. Put peace on. Pray, “Lord, I step into this with Your peace.” This is traction.
Evan’s First Peace-Filled Day
Later that week, Evan walked into a tense meeting at work. Normally, he would have been anxious, defensive, or overwhelmed.
But that morning, he had prayed: “Jesus, give me Your footing.”
And something changed. His voice was calm. His thoughts were clear. His emotions were steady. His reactions were gentle. His decisions were wise.
The meeting didn’t magically become easy. But Evan didn’t slip.
He walked out knowing: Peace isn’t the absence of pressure. Peace is stability inside pressure.
He texted Serena afterward:
“Pastor… I wore the shoes today.”
Reflection Prompts
- Where do you feel unstable right now?
- Which gospel truths steady your steps?
- What morning rhythm helps you “put on” peace?
- Where do you need peace in your relationships?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, You are my peace. Steady my steps today. Anchor my heart in Your gospel. Give me traction in every battle. Let Your peace guard my mind, guide my decisions, and carry me through every moment. Make my footing firm, my spirit calm, and my walk unshakeable. Amen.
