Bible Reading – Ephesians 6:16
The harmattan winds settled over the Volta Region, leaving the air dry and the sky hazy. Kofi walked the narrow red-dirt footpath toward his home, distant drums echoing from a village preparing for a festival.
But his heart was not celebrating.
Earlier that day, bad news had hit him in rapid succession. His business partner had pulled out of their venture. A rumour about him had begun spreading. A family member accused him of neglect, and a heavy bill had arrived.
Each one felt like a physical blow. Each one felt like a fiery dart.
As he reached the shade of the ancient mango tree near his compound, he stopped, the weight of the day pressing down on his shoulders.
“Lord… why does everything feel like it’s hitting me at once?”
The Spirit answered softly, a quiet whisper cutting through the rustle of the dry leaves:
“Lift your shield.”
Kofi didn’t fully understand yet. But he knew the voice.
What Paul Meant in Ephesians 6:16
Kofi sat on a carved wooden stool outside his home, opened his worn Bible, and read:
“Above all, taking the shield of faith, with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.” (Ephesians 6:16)
He paused at the phrase “above all.”
The shield Paul referred to was the scutum – a massive, body-length shield made of layered wood and leather. Soldiers soaked these shields in water before battle so flaming arrows would extinguish upon impact.
Faith is not small or fragile. Faith is a shield…..large, protective, and extinguishing. Paul says “above all” because without faith, every dart hits the heart.
The Elder’s Wisdom
The next morning, Kofi sought out Elder Mensah, a deeply respected believer in the village. The elder sat beneath a sprawling neem tree, reading Scripture with his reading glasses perched low on his nose.
Kofi poured out everything – the rumours, the financial pressure, the accusations, the fear.
Elder Mensah listened quietly. Finally, he spoke.
“Kofi, you are facing arrows. But arrows are not the problem. The problem is when a man faces arrows without a shield.”
He pointed a weathered finger at Kofi’s Bible.
“Faith is not believing everything will go well. Faith is trusting God even when everything goes wrong.”
Then he quoted:
“The Lord is my strength and my shield.” (Psalm 28:7)
“Do not be afraid… I am your shield.” (Genesis 15:1)
“This is the victory that has overcome the world – our faith.” (1 John 5:4)
Kofi felt something fundamental shift inside him.
“So the shield is not my own confidence,” he said slowly. “It is God’s character.”
Elder Mensah smiled, his eyes crinkling at the corners. “Exactly.”
That evening, Kofi walked again beneath the mango tree. The pressures were still there. The rumours had not stopped. The bill had not disappeared. The conflict had not resolved.
But Kofi was different. He lifted his shield.
He said aloud into the evening air:
“God is with me.”
“God is my defender.”
“God is my provider.”
“God is my shield.”
“God will fight for me.”
“God has not abandoned me.”
Each declaration felt like cool water soaking into thick leather.
And when the darts came….be it fear, accusation, financial panic, discouragement….they struck something solid. They fizzled out. They lost their fire. They fell harmlessly at his feet.
Kofi whispered, “Lord, thank You for teaching me to lift my shield.”
How to Lift the Shield of Faith Daily
1. Faith Speaks Before Feelings Settle
Faith is vocal. Faith declares truth before emotions agree. Speak Scripture aloud when the arrows fly: “When I am afraid, I will trust in You.” (Psalm 56:3)
2. Faith Remembers God’s Track Record
Write down three things God has done for you in the past. Remembering His faithfulness strengthens your shield for the present.
3. Faith Rejects the Enemy’s Narrative
Every fiery dart carries a lie: “You’re alone. You’re failing. God won’t help you.” Faith answers boldly: “That is not what God said.”
4. Faith Stands With Others
Roman soldiers locked their shields together to form an impenetrable wall. Find someone who can pray with you. Lock shields.

Prayer
Lord, teach me to lift the shield of faith. Strengthen my trust in Your character. Anchor my confidence in Your promises. Extinguish every fiery dart aimed at my heart. Let faith guard my mind, protect my emotions, and steady my steps. Make me unshakeable in battle and unwavering in hope. Amen.
