The Gate: Christ the Only Way

Before you read another word, think about this. How did you walk into today?

Did you wake up already rehearsing yesterday’s mistakes? Already bracing yourself, like God is a little disappointed and you will have to earn your way back into His good graces? If so, stay with me for a minute. This one is for you.

The Morning Amara Almost Didn’t Pray

The sun was barely up over Benin City. Keke horns, distant chatter, the slow hum of traffic waking up outside her window. Amara sat on the edge of her bed, and her shoulders were heavier than the morning had any right to make them.

Yesterday had gone wrong in small, familiar ways. She snapped at her husband over something that did not deserve it. She skipped her devotional time again. She spent most of the evening feeling spiritually flat, like she was going through the motions with nothing underneath them.

So this morning, sitting in the quiet, she did not feel ready to approach God. Who would, after a day like that?

She whispered it honestly. “Lord, I don’t even know how to come to You today.”

This is usually where we stop, is it not? This is the moment guilt convinces us to wait. Clean yourself up first, get a few good days under your belt, then come back to prayer with confidence.

But something else moved in Amara’s heart instead. It was quiet, like a breeze through a still room.

Come through the Gate.

She closed her eyes. In her spirit, not with her physical eyes but somewhere just as real, she saw it. A wide gate, woven through with blue and purple and scarlet thread, standing open. It was neither guarded, nor half closed. It was simply open. Waiting for her.

Why the Gate Was Never About Restriction

Here is something worth knowing. When God gave the pattern for the Tabernacle, He did not design multiple ways in. There was one gate. One entrance, on the eastern side, and nothing else (Exodus 27:16). No back door for the people who had a good week. No side entrance for the ones who did not.

That single gate was not God being difficult. It was God being clear. One way in means you never have to guess. You never have to wonder if you took the wrong path. You never have to compare your access to someone else’s. There is no confusion to strive through. Just an open door with your name on the invitation.

Centuries later, Jesus stood in front of people and said the quiet part out loud. “I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. They will come in and go out, and find pasture” (John 10:9, NIV).

That Tabernacle gate had been pointing at Him the whole time.

What God Said to Amara, and What He Is Saying to You

In her spirit, Amara heard it plainly, the way you hear something true rather than something loud.

You don’t enter because you had a perfect day yesterday. You enter because Christ opened the way.

It is neither beacuse of your discipline, nor your streak of good devotionals. Not how you handled that argument with your husband. Christ opened the way. He did it once, fully, so you would never have to reopen it yourself through good behavior.

This is the part so many of us miss, because we forget to apply it daily. You do not come to God through guilt. You do not come through performance, spiritual achievement, or chasing an emotional high to feel worthy enough to pray. You come through Christ. Only through Christ. The door was never locked against you. It was already standing open.

That is grace, made visible as an actual gate you can picture yourself walking through.

Amara’s shoulders loosened. Her breath came slower. Something in her chest that had been clenched since yesterday finally let go.

She whispered again, this time steady, not searching. “Jesus, I come through You.”

And she stepped forward. Yesterday had not been redeemed by anything she had done, but because Christ had already made the way. The Gate was open. It had been open the whole time.

This Is Your Gate Too

Whatever is standing between you and God this morning, whether it is a failure, an inconsistency, or a feeling that you need to try harder before you are allowed to show up, none of it is the gate. Christ is the gate. And He is already open toward you.

Try this before you pray tomorrow. Do not wait to feel ready. Just whisper, “Lord Jesus, I come through You,” and walk in exactly as you are.

Sit With This for a Moment

  • Do you ever feel unworthy to approach God, like you need a good day first?
  • What usually stands guard at your gate before you pray? Guilt? Fear? Hesitation?
  • If you truly believed Christ was your only access, not your performance, how would that change the way you start tomorrow?

A Prayer to Make This Your Own

Lord Jesus, thank You for being the Gate. Thank You for opening the way for me to come boldly, freely, and confidently into the Father’s presence. Teach me to approach God through You every day, not through guilt, fear, or performance. Let my heart rest in Your finished work. Amen.

This Week’s Practice

Before you pray each morning, whether you feel ready or not, whisper:

“Jesus, I come through You.”

Let that be the sentence that opens the gate, every single time.
